September is National Preparedness Month!

September marks the 7th Annual National Preparedness Month (NPM) as hosted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

This month we will try to post some informative articles for residents to provide a guide for NPM2010.

Preparing for Hurricane Earl

Long Island is preparing for the incoming Hurricane Earl. Set to hit land on Long Island this Labor Day weekend, Hurricane Earl has reached Category 4 which means winds at approximately 131 - 155 mph and a storm surge of 13 - 18 feet (according to the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale).

SMFD Mutual Aid to Garden City Park

The Stewart Manor Fire Department was awoken this morning to a 5:30am call at Robby Lane in Garden City Park.

No home owner or FF injuries were reported and there is no word yet on what caused the fire.

Members of our volunteer fire departments do many things besides fight fires and respond to ambulance calls. In a recent column, we talked about their commitment to supporting our troops. In Nassau County they spearhead Operation Wounded Warrior and provide hundreds of pounds of goodies to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan through Adopt a Battalion. There is variety in their role as life savers as well.
